Walk with a Cop- Collaboration to Support Columbia County

Did you know that you can Walk with a Cop?  St. Helens Police Sergeant Rick Graham and Officer Alex Bubar, Columbia City have joined St. Helens resident, Judy Thompson’s team, called the  Legacy Devers Dynamos.  Together they invite you to join them in the 2015 NAMI Walk on Sunday May 17th.

What is NAMI?  NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, providing support, education, research, and advocacy for individuals, families, and friends of those living with mental illness. The 13th Annual Northwest NAMI Walk is held in Portland.  Every year  representatives from Columbia County have walked to raise awareness about mental health issues.  NAMI holds this event each year to keep NAMI programs and services free of charge for those who need them. More Information on NAMI Walk 2015

For the last four years,  local citizen, Judy Thompson has been walking for Columbia County.  This year her team has raised a little over $7,000.00.  These funds are donated back to local organizations that support mental health awareness such as $500.00 to  Sacagawea Health Center in Feb 2015 to contribute to their  Touch the Heart of a Child” annual fund raiser.   Mental health services for local school children are just one of the many services that Sacagewea Helath Care Center provides .  NAMI Columbia County provided Christmas for Peers of Columbia Community Mental Health (CCMH) which involved giving out 160 gift cards in Dec 2014. Since 2011. NAMI Columbia County has been assisting with financial resources to help local law enforcement officers attend the Crisis Intervention Team Training (CIT).  NAMI of Columbia County helps to make an impact.

Join Judy’s team to continue to do good things for Columbia County.  Judy  hopes to have 100 people walking on her team for Columbia County.   Not able to walk?  You can be a Virtual Walker or donate to a great team.   When you support this effort, you help to  spread the word that mental illness is ok to talk.  You help to share that NAMI is a strong resource in and out of crisis.  There is no fee to register to walk.  Go to team page to join and support Sgt. What’s SHOR?

Have you heard about SHOR (St. Helens Organics Recycling, LLC)?

SHOR held two open houses last week at the St. Helen’s Armory to share information with the public about the proposed St. Helens Organics Recycling facility.  You might be asking yourself what does that mean?  SHOR  seeks to be a leader in environmental sustainability by providing an alternative to sending food scraps to the landfill.   SHOR would use a 100 year old process called anaerobic digestion in a closed facility to produce a methane gas similar to natural gas used to create electricity, energy to run some of the operations at the mill or as a transportation fuel for the trucks that serve the mill.  Not only does this process create a renewable energy but it would also would provide a valuable source of nutrients for local farm and agricultural reuse.

SHOR’s proposed site is to be c0-located on the Cascade Tissue (formly Boise White Paper) Mill site.  SHOR shared that both the residents and businesses will benefit from having a community facility that demonstrates real leadership in environmental sustainability. It will also provide jobs and serve as an anchor to help attract other businesses that value the protection of the environment.  SHOR’s next steps are to apply for permits for a permits from the Department of Environmental Quality which will require a hearing prior to issuance.

“It was the puppies that stole the show.” – Denim & Diamonds

St. Helens, OR-  The people outnumbered the puppies on Saturday February 7th, 2015 at the Columbia County Fairgrounds Pavillion to raise funds at “Denim & Diamonds” Dinner, Auction & Dance for the Columbia Humane Society.   But who can resist holding a little one, so I would say the puppies surely stole the show.

Citizens from Columbia County came out to support the Columbia Humane Society which is a no-kill shelter that started in 1985 to help displaced and neglected animals find new homes.  They offer services such pet adoptions and a Vaccine Clinic throughout the year and across Columbia County.  Also, it’s a great place to volunteer as an indiviudal or a team. Columbia Humane Society is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization who does not receive funding from any national or state animal welfare group or government agency. Their operations rely solely on income from their members, donors, small grants & fundraising events.  How to Support Columbia County Humane Society?

Large turnout in St. Helens for ’13 Nights’ kick-off

ST. HELENS — Stone in Love, a Journey tribute band, marked the start of the 10th annual 13 Nights on the River concert series on June 5 in Columbia View Park, located off The Strand street in Olde Towne.

Weekly performances will continue from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 28. Admission is free. An open air market selling crafts, food and beer also will be featured from 3 to 9 p.m.

2014 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo update

ST. HELENS — The theme for the 2014 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo is “Country Roots and Cowboy Boots”. Darci Solimine of St. Helens submitted the winning idea for the theme.

The Friends of Columbia County Fair are selling event posters for $5 each (see image). Proceeds from the sales will benefit the fairgrounds. Posters from previous years are also available.

Clean-up volunteers are needed during fair week. Applicants must be 12 and older and available for morning or afternoon shifts. Those who work one shift will earn a meal ticket. Those who work two shifts will earn a meal ticket, plus a one-day pass for carnival rides. Details: Message Amanda McFeron via Facebook.

Superintendents for the art and floral open classes also are being recruited. People who have knowledge of different types of art, or in multiple types of horticulture, are encouraged to apply. Lewis and Clark secretary awarded school employee of the year

ST. HELENS — Jeanette Sessions, a 24-year veteran of the St. Helens School District, has been chosen as the Oregon Schools Employees Association employee of the year.

Sessions currently works as the head secretary at Lewis and Clark Elementary in St. Helens. Her supervisor, principal Cathy Carson, nominated her for the award, referring to Sessions as the heart and soul of their school in her recommendation letter.

The announcement of Sessions’ award was made on May 8 during a surprise celebration, cloaked as a mandatory staff meeting, in the school library. Sessions’ family, friends and current and former co-workers were in attendance.

Sessions was caught off-guard by the award because she was unaware of her nomination by Carson. According to an OSEA press release, Sessions said, “When I saw my retired friends here (at the meeting) my first thought was… I didn’t retire yet!”

The employee of the year award is one of the highest honors of OSEA. The award is given out annually, and recipients are chosen from a pool of Oregon nominees by a committee of past OSEA presidents.

Sessions will be recognized during an awards ceremony at the 2014 OSEA Conference from June 26-28 in Portland.

 


Scappoose Farmers Market opens for 12th season

SCAPPOOSE — The Scappoose Farmers Market has returned for its 12th season.

Vendors will sell goods from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through Sept. 27 in the Scappoose City Hall parking lot, and along Southeast Second Street, off of East Columbia Avenue.

Shoppers will find fresh, locally grown vegetables, fruits, and seasonal Oregon berries, as well as nursery plants, herbs, flowers, handcrafted items by local and regional artisans, and other items for sale.

On average, the market features between 22-24 vendors a week. For those who are interested in selling their wares at the market, contact the Scappoose Community Club for information about guidelines and fees.

‘Sailing for Sacagawea’ benefit May 31 in St. Helens

ST. HELENS — Sacagawea Health Center will host their 12th annual “Touch the Heart of Child” auction and benefit May 31 at the Columbia County Fairgrounds.

The theme of the event is “Sailing for Sacagawea”. It will include a hosted bar, appetizers and a barbecue dinner by Blackbird Catering, entertainment, and a silent and oral auction. Travel packages, fine art, pottery, glass works and other items will be up for bid.

Tickets are $45 each and can be purchased at Sacagawea Health Center, Houlton Bakery and the South Columbia County Chamber of Commerce in St. Helens, and at Fultano’s Pizza in Scappoose.

The Sacagawea Health Center is a non-profit organization that extends medical care and other services to students in Columbia County (regardless of having health insurance). Primary health care, such as, well-child examinations, immunizations, treatment for chronic conditions like asthma or diabetes, and sports physicals are offered.

The center also provides prevention services, including fitness and nutrition classes, and some mental health services, such as family counseling and counseling for depression.

2014 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo dates announced

ST. HELENS – The 2014 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo will be July 16-20 at the Columbia County Fairgrounds, 58892 Saulser Road.

Discount days:

• Wednesday will be Seniors/Veterans Day, and includes free admission to service veterans and those ages 60 and older until 3 p.m.

• Thursday will be Kids’ Day, and includes free admission to children through age 17 until 3 p.m.

• Sunday is Half-priced day.

Presale tickets are currently available in the fair office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Advance day passes are free to ages 6 and younger, $4 to youth ages 7-17, $7 to adults ages 18-59, and $4 to senior citizens ages 60 and older.

Advance season passes (for all five days) are free to ages 6 and younger, $15 to youth ages 7-17, $30 to adults ages 18-59, and $15 to senior citizens ages 60 and older.

Carnival wristbands can be purchased in advance for $23. This covers one day of carnival rides only.

Parking will be $4 a car, per day, or $16 for the entire week.

The Northwest Professional Rodeo Association competition will be on Friday and Saturday. Admission to rodeo is included with the purchase of a day pass.
