June 16th Community Events

Columbia County- The 3rd Saturday in June is a day filled with family fun activities around Columbia County.  The Kiwanis Parade in St Helens happens every year at noon on the 3rd Saturday. This year a few other local events such as the Cycle Columbia Challenge starting and ending in Scappoose and Scappoose Party in the Park with live music and extended Scappoose Farmers Market hours also happens the same day.  It’s a day full of community fun right in your backyard a little something for everyone.

The Kiwanis Parade is a yearly tradition.  This year’s theme is “Honoring Those That Serve.”  Spectators can set up a prime spot anywhere along the streets of Columbia Blvd. The standard parade route starts at the corner of Hwy 30 & Emmert Motors and continues down to to the Dockside restaurant. It starts at 12:00 and typically lasts about an hour or longer depending on the number of entrants.  This is a FREE parade to enter to showcase your business or community.  If you want to participate in the parade or want more details, follow the Facebook Event.   Parades are a fun way to meet your neighbors and celebrate small-town life.  You can also tune into KOHI 1600 AM or stream from App Tune IN to listen to the parade as our local radio station broadcasts live from the event.

If you are a cyclist, you can join in the 3rd Annual Cycle Century Challenge.   This is the only cycling event in Columbia County.  It has two different routes a Century Plus and a Metric Century Plus with scenic views of farmland, timberlands, on unpaved historic CZ Trail, and charming small towns. Plus all the Cyclists are invited to the Scappoose Party in the Park after the race.  You can sign up in advance or register the day of the event. Why not end the day with a community party?  This year Scappoose Party in the Park starts with extended Scappoose Farmers’ Market hours and live music Hit Machine Unplugged will perform a kid-friendly performance from 4-6 PM.

New Summer Recreation Program

St. Helens, OR – The citizens of St Helens have a whole new program for all ages filled with activities and classes galore for Summer 2018 thanks to a new St. Helens Recreation Program.   This program is a partnership between the City of St. Helens and the St. Helens School District to fill a need for a centralized program for recreation creating a sense of community.  Working in partnership the two organizations had a good start on the inventory of facilities.  Project coordinators asked for citizen input on upcoming classes they would like to see and where a need should be filled such as a monthly family movie night. This input created a diverse Summer Recreation Program for St. Helen’s citizens.

Anyone can register for the new program on the website.  Over 14 programs from Yoga in the Park, Community Game Night, Co-Ed Volleyball, Painting,  Movie Night, Terrarum Making Classes, Walking Groups and so much available throughout the summer months for all ages.  You’ll also get information for what’s going on at St. Helens Public Library, Eisenschmidt Pool, Summer Meals, and other community events such as 13 Nights on the River.

Shanna Duggan volunteer with the project also runs a Facebook group called Columbia County Sole Sisters for women to promote health. They provide online support and events to create a culture of a community.  Columbia County Sole Sisters is for women only.   She also works as the Utility  Billing, Court, and Bank Specialist for the City of St. Helens.  Working with this project is a perfect fit for Shanna.  When you meet her she’ll tell you that she loves to create events to help pull her community together. As soon as she was asked Shanna wanted to help with the project. She shared, “I am passionate about community. It’s something I take pride in, volunteer for, and helps me to find connections for myself and others. I have seen a need for a recreation program since I moved here 16 years ago.  When I was asked to help work on this project, it was an immediate yes. To me, a recreation program helps people connect with others, find a purpose, and provides opportunities to explore what is right here in front of us. So many times we leave Columbia County to do things that are already offered locally or could easily be offered here. It’s a win for everyone.  I think that in today’s times, with cellphones and other distractions, bringing it back to the basics is such an important thing AND it’s fun. I mean, who doesn’t smile when they are playing freeze tag, painting, or doing a scavenger hunt?”

She said she is excited about the future of the program.  ” I would love to see it be offered year-round with inclusive and diverse programs that partner with community members, local businesses, and sports programs. I hope we continue to find ways to offer programs at a lower rate for community members or at a price that’s affordable for low-income populations.  I believe a recreation program can be a backbone of a community.”

Spring Into Art 2018

St. Helens, OR –  Book Signing, Open Mic, Fiber Art & Leather Making Demos, all ages Coloring Contest and more fun.  What do all of these have in common?  It’s the 3rd Annual Spring Into Art event at The Columbia Learning Center, 375 18th Street St. Helens hosted by the Columbia Arts Guild (CAG) on May 5th from 10 AM- 4 PM.  This is a free family-friendly fun community event.

Columbia Arts Guild is a powerhouse for pulling Columbia County artists working in a variety of mediums together to support all the Arts.  Teresa Knight, President of CAG,  was excited to add more vendors to the mix this year.  She told us that Spring Into Art is important to host because “A very good friend of mine told me that art builds community. I believe we are all born as creative individuals. When we surround ourselves with art it inspires us to try again or challenges us to do something new. The synergy of a festival brings together people who are active in art and those who may be interested but not sure where to start. Most of all there is an atmosphere of fun!”  Teresa noted, “As for me I love art, all kinds of art and I love a party!”

New this year, sponsors donated prizes for the coloring contest and raffles!  Events like this couldn’t happen with support from local businesses like St. Helens Market Fresh (Red Apple), Walmart, Safeway, Ace Hardware and Lagunitas Brewing Company.   You still have time to participate in Coloring Contest.  Entries taken until noon on May 4th, Drop off at the Columbia Learning Center.  You can go to this link for contest rules and pages.  Be sure to click on right click on the image, save as and print out to color to participate.

Other partners on site will be This Is Us St. Helens, a community art project, St Helens Ukelele Orchestra,  Sausage King food cart with food available for purchase and of course the art show and vendors! The Columbia Humane Society will be on site and if possible please bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Columbia Pacific Food Bank.

Local events like these give you a chance to meet your neighbor, learn something new or just have fun.  See you on Saturday!

Farm to Table Cooking Class

Deer Island, OR – It’s new to Columbia County.  It’s a twist on the Farm to Table concept trendy in the restaurants but different.  It’s a farm tour, a cooking class, and then eating! It’s called “Good Farm- Good Eats” a new event happening here in Columbia County on April 14th at Canaan Hill Farm, 33219 Canaan Road, Deer Island, Oregon 97054 from 1:00-2:30 PM.  You can purchase tickets directly on the website Eventbrite.   At this event, you’ll be cooking with the food at the farm after you have met the farmer.

Lindsey Jones, RD (Registered & Licensed Dietitian since 2006) has been cooking with individuals to help them on their wellness journey or in groups since she opened her private practice, One on One Good Easts in 2014.

Lindsey loves to share nutrition information with kids and adults alike.  In 2017,  she partnered with St Helens Community Credit to promote a project called “Going Green” promoting Budgets & Wellness with her emphasis on presenting the importance of nutrition to local businesses, teachers & administrators in our schools.   Lindsey loves to teach nutrition.  She believes, “So many people have become disconnected from their bodies and minds- how they function, and the role that food and nutrition play in that.  I love teaching people how to create healthy minds and bodies.”

This year she is sharing a new experience with a local business while Farm to Table is popular in restaurants a close partner, agri-tourism is popping up in rural areas to promote tourism.  As defined by Wikipedia, Agritourism or agrotourism, as it is defined most broadly, involves any agriculturally-based operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm or ranch.     Canaan Hill Farm owners, Pat & Jeannie Schenk approached Lindsey about cooking on their farm.   This is the first agritourism kick-off event to start as more “Good Farm-Good Eats” events will happen during the growing season.   Lindsey wanted to partner with a local farm because, “Connecting people with the farmers and with local food that is grown and raised in a sustainable and responsible way, is vital to promoting thriving and sustainable food systems.”   People want to know where their food comes from and with the close proximity to farms, we have fresh produce and opportunities in our backyards & surrounding communities here in Columbia County.

Oldest Photo of Oregon Senate Donated by Your Neighbor

St. Helens, OR – On March 3rd, during the 2018 Oregon Legislative Session in Salem, Senator Betsy Johnson presented the Oregon Senate with the oldest photo of the Senate and showed members of the 12th Bi-Annual 1882 Oregon Senate.  Local resident Diane Kruggel Dillard recently found this heirloom photo and wanted to share it with the Oregon Senate.

The Dillard family has a long history of public service in Columbia County. The photo was the property of William Barclay Dillard married to Susan Holcomb Dillard, and who were early residents of St. Helens. William Barclay worked as a Columbia County District Attorney and his wife was the first postmistress and later head librarian. They had two sons, William Walden and James Mason. Walden, like his father, served as County District Attorney while James Mason was appointed Federal District Attorney.  The Dillard family had two sons, Max W. “Sandy” Dillard and Carl Dillard.

Diane Dillard married Sandy in 1964. Sandy served as a County Commissioner for Columbia County.   Diane served as Communications Manager for Boise Cascade and retired after 44 years of service. She donated her time to many worthy causes including, Columbia Rural Fire District, United Way, CASA, Chamber of Commerce, Sacagawea and Chance to Become Scholarship.  Diane, a widow, is still a strong supporter of Columbia County.

Business Bits: The Lake House

Scappoose, OR – The new business that has everyone buzzing comes complete with a water feature as one would imagine from its name, The Lake House.  It is located at 1600 SE 9th St. in Scappoose, OR.  They opened their doors to events after hosting their first wedding in August of 2017.

Since then they’ve hosted many types of events such as baby showers, class reunions, weddings, birthday parties, memorials, family reunions, holiday events, and much more.  They have a blast at everything they do with the main goal to make their client’s vision come to life.

It’s not surprising that this new event, performance & concert venue is such a success from the start. Bart Hafeman, the owner, decided to open the doors to events because of his years of experience in the industry and his desire to create a warm, positive atmosphere for celebrating unique moments and milestones in life.   If you’ve seen Bart play, he carries that rock n roll, have fun just dance attitude always with a big smile.  He makes you want to get up and go.  His positive outlook on life carries thru in his interactions with his audience and clients.

Bart’s experience gives The Lake House its own relaxed atmosphere that draws people to his venue.  Bart Hafeman is widely known as the singer for Hit Machine, and because of that he’s been able to entertain at a handful of our events- However, they have hosted small private exclusive events like Jennifer Batten, guitar player for Michael Jackson on the Bad, History and Dangerous world tours. Bart joined in and sang “Human Nature” with her that evening. Tommy Tutone who sang the 80’s hit, “867-5309” has performed on the property as well.  They are currently working on a Lake House Summer Concert Series and would love to hear from people about who they would like to see perform at The Lake House.  Please send your suggestions to ashley.gray28@yahoo.com.  They want to hear from you!

If you are looking for a venue to host an event, you may want to consider The Lake House.  They can accommodate between  20 to 200 people. For winter events the barn can hold up to 85 individuals downstairs and 30 people upstairs- summer events offer more room due to better weather conditions, which allows up to 200 guests.   Additionally, they offer a complete package for the one-stop shopper, or can customize an event when desired. They have a list of preferred vendors but are always open to our client’s dreams and desires for their event.  The Lake House offers an incredibly unique atmosphere that carries a rustic and elegant element all at the same time. The barn has a warm intimate feeling that not many venues offer.

A Growing Art Scene

Columbia County-  Thanks to the Columbia Arts Guild, 2018 brings many opportunities for Artists and Art Enthusiasts alike.  The  Columbia Arts Guild (CAG) has accomplished big things in just a few years for local artists.  This group of committed and talented volunteers continues to work together to bring more to the table in 2018 for our communities.  In 2017, the group became an official 501(c) 3 and fundraised to build a secure cabinet to display art at the St Helens Public Library.  You can find more about their group on their website

Columbia Arts Guild is connecting like-minded artists with one another by creating together, hosting a countywide art competition, a community art project and a celebration with hands-on art.  A little something for everyone. Here are more specifics about the upcoming CAG events and ways you can get involved:

  • Art Happening- Paint the Town.  Weekly group of artists that meet on Thursdays at 10:00 AM in the hallway of the Columbia Learning Center.  The goal is for the artist to Bring Your Own Art (BYOA), work on your project, get advice, share information, listen or join the Urban Sketchers as they go out to Paint the Town! 
  • CAG Virtual Arts Competition will run until Dec 31st, 2018.  The competition is called Adventure & Art in Columbia County.   To enter go to their Facebook paged upload your submission photo in the album.  Competition is open to all Columbia County residents.  Basic guidelines, you can enter as many times in as many categories as you want.  Open to all mediums.  Judging will be in January 2019, people’s choice awards will be chosen by a number of likes on the Facebook post with people’s choice. The competition is for the I LOVE Columbia County Book will be created with winners published by December 2019 available on Amazon in 2020. The I LOVE Columbia County book proceeds will go to further Art Opportunities in Columbia County through the Columbia Arts Guild.
  • “This is Us” St. Helens is a Community Art Project.  During the next several months the CAG will be hosting “This Is Us” paint events throughout the St. Helens area. Paint events are the opportunity for you and your group of 10 or more to take part in this project. They provide everything you need to paint your house and participate.   CAG will keep all the painted, signed houses created by the community so that we may assemble them into one large piece of community art.  Everyone can create/paint one house to represent themselves in our diverse community.   • Spring Walk Into Art is in its 3rd year to Celebrate the Arts!  It has a Professional Art Show, Youth Art Show, Music, Dancing, Open Mic, Book Signing, Culinary Art, Hands on Art and more!  Save the date for May 5th at Columbia Learning Center, 375 S 18th St, Saint Helens, Oregon 97051.

Columbia County Celebrates Halloweentown!

Columbia County-  Leaves are dropping along with the temperature, Fall has arrived and Halloween is quickly approaching for Columbia County.   With the movie Halloweentown filmed in St. Helens in 1998, the city is still celebrating and the many across Columbia County have also embraced this holiday.

Local citizens have ties to the movie as many had their debut acting in the movie as extras such as Rainier Mayor, Jerry Cole along with Clatskanie resident, Brian Fawcett.  Brian was a kid at the time who got his first paycheck as an extra to perform alongside his sister and mom in an Aladdin Costume.  Brian shared that his favorite memory of the movie was, “Being part of a locally made movie with my family was a cool experience. And watching the movie near Halloween after the fact to find myself, my mom, and my sister in random scenes made for some good memories.”  Maybe that’s why so many people jump at the chance to celebrate Halloween and welcome curious tourists.

The movie has a cult following that will bring a lot of tourists to the area for Halloween the month of October for a variety of activities.  To view, a list of Spirit of Halloweentown events go to www.discovercolumbiacounty.com and www.keepitlocalcc.com to view many local events.  SHEDCO (ST Helens Economic Development Corporation) has partnered with several local groups to host a few events for locals to have some fun along with the tourists and ways they can get engaged to show off their local community.

A signature event to kick off the month-long celebration is the Halloweentown Parade that is on Oct 7th at 3:00 PM.   Last year,  the parade had a Witches Float, Star Wars of Oregon, Columbia County Sherrif Department, Aliens, Zombie fighters, Scary Clown Bikers and more participated.  The 2nd year parade is sure to outshine the past year.  When asked what will make this year different?” Gretchen Williams, Parade Organizer, replied, “For me, the parade this year is different from the last because of the willingness from groups to participate. Many crowd favorites from last year contacted me immediately wanting to return. I didn’t even have to ask them! I have several families who have signed up to participate simply because they love Halloween. I’m very excited to see their entries! We are on track to surpass the number of entries we had last year. Something else that is new this year is that I did not have to charge an entry fee. Thanks to several additional sponsors, everyone can participate for free.”  Afterwards, the Community Pumpkin lightening will take place in the Holiday Plaza at 7:00 PM.

  • September 25th-Oct 6th Participate in a Scarecrow Contest.  Open to all citizens and businesses Across Columbia County are invited to put up a ScareCrow for the Spirit of Halloweentown ScareCrow Contest.  Winners get $150 sponsored by the City of St. Helens.  You can post your photos to the FB page between Sept 25th- Oct 6th details on the facebook page.
  • Oct 7th – Halloweentown Parade sponsored by SCC Chamber of Commerce, SHEDCO & Columbia River PUD Oct 7th.  Locals can participate in the parade for free by emailing  sohtparade2017@gmail.com for an application.  
  • Oct 7th- The Bite of Columbia County – Be a spectator!  It’s a fundraiser for the Columbia Pacific Food Bank & St Helens BackPack Program.  Get your tickets online for $30.00 each or 2 for $50.00 or you can purchase at Bertucci’s and Houlton Bakery.  You’ll get to sample foods from over 20 local restaurants.
  • Oct 14th- Columbia County Rotary- Monster Dash Fundraiser for local Columbia County Veterans. Sign up here.
  • October 6th – Oct 30th.  If you like to get dressed up in costume, you can become a WayFinding Witch.  What’s that?  It’s a chance to share our local businesses and happenings with the tourists in your Halloween Costume.  Click on the link, to sign up for a volunteer spot.
  • Oct 15th – Meet and Treat at Aggies featuring Kimberly Brown. Locals use your zip code to receive a discount on tickets.  Follow the event on Facebook for more information. 
  • Oct 21st – Annual Masquerade Charity Ball hosted by Windemere Foundation Columbia County
  • Oct 19th,20,21st at 7:00 PM & 21st at 2 PM ShoeString Theatre, “The War of the Worlds” on October 19, 20, 21 at 7 pm, and October 21 for a 2 pm matinee.  Tickets on Sale September 30th online or at Bertucci’s. 

 


Business Bits: YooDoo Selfies, LLC

Columbia County- Two sisters, Stephanie Pescio (formerly Hall) & and Sandra Mohler both hail from Rainier, Oregon.  Although the sisters are physically separated by a few miles and a bridge, the girls stay close by growing a new business as Sandra now lives in Longview, WA.  They recently opened their new business in Columbia County that can help enhance local events and create memories.  It’s a  pop up open air photo booth, called YooDoo Selfies, LLC. They serve Columbia County, Cowlitz & Clatsop Counties.

Stephanie shared, “We started YooDoo Selfies, LLC because our mother always wanted us, girls, to create a family business.  We honor her memory of 10 years of caregiving by taking time now to create a business that can unite our family in joy.”  After much research paired with a business plan, they opened their business in Summer of 2017.   When asked what makes them different from their local competitors Stephanie replied, ” We use a Venue Pro Selfie machine.  It’s equipped to send your pictures straight to your email, text, or Facebook.  We are two sisters honoring our mother’s memory by starting a business that creates memories for others and gives joy and happiness.  We are fun and having fun is what YooDoo is all about.”

When asked what makes their business successful, Stephanie was quick to respond, “People are what makes any business successful.  This industry is about memorializing our moments of happiness, joy, and excitement.  YooDoo Selfies, LLC is here to help your event become more than just a celebration.  It is a chance to mingle have fun and take some selfies.  Play with our props or enjoy our green screen options with many backgrounds to choose from.”  This is a fun business that can be added to a family event such as a birthday, family reunion, weddings, bridal showers, graduation parties and many other events.

Classic Cars, Antique Airplanes & More!

Columbia County, OR – Columbia County has an active car club.  Have you heard of the Highway 30 Cruisers, a nonprofit with approximately 30 members and growing?  This car club stays busy, especially in the Summer.  Members invite you out to view their cars for some fun, a trip down memory lane sharing history with loved ones or maybe you own a car?  So many ways to get involved at all ages.

In case you missed it, it’s not too late.  Every Friday night in St Helens July-August this group holds an event called Cruzin The Gut.  Still, three weeks to go held on August 11th, 19th & 25th. The club members meet at a different business at 6:30 pm, raffle at 8:30 pm with prizes from local businesses and 50/50 raffle with donations towards their Scholarship Fund.  The cars cruise until they want to go home. This is a great family friendly event to take the kids to see the cars or a great date night.  Follow their Facebook page to keep up to date on the Cruzin The Gut.

Highway 30 Cruisers also co-hosts an annual fundraiser with the Northwest Antique Airplane Club to put on the Northwest Classic Fly-In, Cruise- In at the Scappoose Airpark on August 19th, 2017. Both organizations are non-profits and raise funds for local scholarships.  The event starts early at 8:00 AM and goes until 3:00 PM.  Live music will fill the air and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also get an airplane ride.  You can enter your car to be judged or park your car on the grass.  It’s $20.00 to enter your car or $5 for being a spectator.

If you own an old car, airplane and live in the area, both groups are growing and looking for more members. Highway 30 Cruisers from St Helens, Oregon is active in the Portland metro car scene. The group meets the 2nd Thursdays at 6:30 PM at the Kozy Korner in St Helens.  Please email hw30cruisers@gmail.com.  More of aviation enthusiast?  You can join the Northwest Antique Airplane Club which meets at the Scappoose Airpark.   You do not have to be a pilot to join just be a flying enthusiast.
