ST. HELENS — The St. Helens Arts and Cultural Commission raised $8,500 during its Sweetheart Ball benefit on Feb. 9.
Proceeds from the event go toward the completion of the Gateway Project, an art installation planned for summer of 2014 along Highway 30 at Milton Creek.
The commission has already banked $26,000 in a trust for the purpose of public art. With their recent earnings, they are more than halfway to earning the $50,000 needed to complete the project.
ST. HELENS — The Columbia County Retired Senior Volunteer Program is accepting nominations for the 2013 My Fair Lady Pageant.
The pageant, held annually during the Columbia County Fair & Rodeo, recognizes senior women from St. Helens, Scappoose, Rainier, Clatskanie and Vernonia who have demonstrated outstanding service in the community.

The deadline for nomination applications is April 5. The pageant is sponsored by Columbia River Public Utilities District and Columbia River Fire & Rescue.
DEER ISLAND — The Columbia River Public Utilities District is collecting scenic images of Columbia County taken by area photographers for their 2014 calendar contest.
The district typically receives about 300 entries annually for the contest. Finalists will be selected in October by the district board, and will have their work posted in the CRPUD lobby, and on their Web site, in able to solicit feedback from customers, which will be used to select the winners.
The contest is open to all photographers, amateur and professional; however, preference will be given to current CRPUD customers. There is no entry fee and no prize money will be awarded.
The deadline to enter is Sept. 13.
