Several Easter egg hunts offered Saturday in Columbia County

Kids, grab your baskets! Easter egg hunts will be offered at the following locaitons in Columbia County on Saturday, April 19:

Clatskanie

Clatskanie Middle School: 10 a.m.; school playing fields, 471 S.W. Bel Air Drive; sponsored by Clatskanie Kiwanis; free.

Scappoose

Grant Watts Elementary: 10 a.m., school playground, 5200 S.E. 3rd Place; for children 12 and younger; thousands of plastic Easter eggs filled with candy and toys will be hidden; sponsored by Scappoose Kiwanis; free.

St. Helens

Columbia County Fairgrounds: mEGGa egg hunt; 11 a.m. (gates open at 9:30 a.m.); 58892 Saulser Road; for ages 12 and younger, and special needs children 15 and younger; other highlights include a petting zoo, face-painting, horse rides, archery and robotics demonstrations and more; free; CC Rider will offer shuttle bus rides from St. Helens High School to the fairgrounds.

Rainer

Riverfront Park: 10 a.m.; on B Street; sponsored by the Rainier Eagles; free.

Vernonia

Hawkins Park: 10 a.m.; end of Park Drive, off Bridge Street; sponsored by Vernonia Community PTA; free.

Vernonia weekend jamboree offers music, logging competitions… and Elvis

VERNONIA — Time to sharpen your axes and polish your steel-toed boots for the 57th annual Vernonia Friendship Jamboree and Logging Show.

The free event is Friday through Sunday, Aug. 2-4,  in downtown Vernonia. Most activities take place on Madison Avenue and Bridge Street; however, numerous other activities are also planned throughout town.

The schedule includes:

Friday: 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., beer garden; noon, info booth, food and craft vendors, kids’ carnival, Black Powder Encampment; 4 p.m., softball tournament (Greenman Field), open air market, Izaak Walton Fishing Derby (Vernonia Lake), Friends of the Vernonia Public Library book sale; 9 to 11:30 p.m., Zack Rumbolz Memorial Dance.

Saturday: All day, info booth, food and craft vendors, kids’ carnival, Black Powder Encaptment, softball tournament, Friends of Vernonia Public Library book sale, Toy and Joy donation booth; 7 to 11 a.m., pancake breakfast; 8 a.m., parade registration; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., petting zoo; 11 a.m., parade (on Bridge Street); 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., beer garden; noon, Erik Kesterson Memorial Motorcycle Show Jamboree Cruise-in; 1 to 6 p.m., Music at the Shay (Shay Park), “Give Back Bash” Elvis tribute featuring Justin Shandor (Vernonia High School commons; alumni gathering will follow); 3 p.m., lawn mower races.

Sunday: All day, info booth, food and craft vendors, kids’ carnival, softball tournament, Black Powder Encampment; 7 a.m., third annual fire and rescue golf tournament (Vernonia Golf Course); 7 to 11 a.m., pancake breakfast; 8 a.m., Ridge Riders play day; 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., beer garden; noon to 4 p.m., 55th annual Vernonia Jamboree Logging Show.

2013 My Fair Lady court

The 2013 My Fair Lady court includes Joanne Bernard of Rainier, Ann Mitchell of Vernonia, Marian Smith of St. Helens, Delores Mellinger of Clatskanie, and Lesle Ruby of Scappoose. A queen will be announced at 1 p.m. Wed, July 17, during a coronation ceremony at the Columbia County Fair and Rodeo.

The My Fair Lady pageant is held annually to recognize senior women for outstanding service in their community. The pageant is sponsored by the Columbia River Public Utilities District, the Columbia County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, and Northwest Apparel.

Winter weather school delays for Thur, Jan. 10

The following school districts in Columbia County have reported late starts today due to inclement winter weather, according to FlashNews.net:

• Rainier School District, two-hour delay, no morning kindergarten.

• Clatskanie School District, two-hour delay, no morning kindergarten, snow route on Cedar Grove Road all day, all students go home on the 3:15 bus run.

• Vernonia School District, two-hour delay, no morning kindergarten.


Weather advisories issued today for parts of Columbia County

The Portland office of the National Weather Service has issued weather advisories today for parts of Columbia County.

  •  An urban and small stream flood advisory has been issued until 1:30 p.m. for western Columbia County, with minor flooding expected.
  •  A snow advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. for elevations of 1,000 feet and higher in Columbia County, particularly in Vernonia, with three-to-six inches of accumulation possible (heaviest snow expected during the morning).
  •  There also have been a few landslides reported in Columbia County as of this morning.
