St. Helens, OR- Locals have been longing for a wine tasting room. Thanks to owner Marci Sanders who opened Tap Into Wine this Summer their wait is over! Columbia County now has a place to sample wine for the locals and tourists are also welcome!
She believes wine ” truly brings out the best in all of us.” They are different because they carry small batch Oregon wines and offer wine growlers to go. Marci mentioned, “Tap Into Wine is the first and only Oregon wine tasting room in Columbia County. We offer a unique experience by bringing a selection of distinctive wines from local small batch wineries by tap in reusable bottles and glasses. Because it’s fresh from the keg, it tastes great, and no bottled wine makes it sustainable “earth friendly.” Marci loves wine and people who love wine which makes her conversations fun and lighthearted.
Marci tells the story with passion about what inspired her to open her business, “Years ago, when we were in Turin, Italy, we discovered a different kind of wine shop across the street from our small hotel. The name etched in my memory…Vino Logo, offered bulk wines from the fabulous Piedmont region of Italy. The owners worked with small batch wineries and purchased their excess wine directly. We walked into the shop, tasted from the selection of wines they featured (described generically, not labeled by the winery, hence the “Vino Logo” name), decided which wines to buy, and they were poured from the tap into reusable bottles to take home. When we finished the wines, we brought the bottles back and repeated the tasting and selection process, this time using our bottle and paying only for the wine. These were excellent wines available at a fraction of the retail price they typically fetched in bottled wine shops.
While Avenue 30 was in business, we learned that the Oregon legislature had passed a bill (signed into law by Governor Kitzhaber) allowing wine to be sold by tap into “growlers”, giving wine lovers the same benefits that craft beer lovers have had for a less expensive and eco-friendly way to try different varieties. Since then, several restaurants around Portland now offer tap wines, as well as bottle shops, but usually with a modest selection. Once again, however, nothing in or near Columbia County!
Is it possible to import the concept from Vino Logo in Italy to our Columbia County? We know that there are wine lovers in Columbia County who are missing Avenue 30 tastings. We also know that there are small batch wineries within a two-hour drive that would be happy to sell their bulk wine supply. Finally, Oregon’s wine growler law allows the sale of bulk wines into refillable bottles, directly from the tap. Putting all of these pieces together and finding the perfect location in downtown St. Helens became the jumping off point to create a new reality for selling wine.”
The hours are great for one’s hectic schedule. Open Friday & Saturday 3-7 and Sundays 2-5 PM with Thursdays open for Special Events. You’ll be able to have a glass of wine or get a 3 or 6 Tasting Flight. If you buy a growler, the tasting fee is waived. For locals, the best deal is to fill on Sundays with the 10 % off Refill from 2-5 special. Welcome to Columbia County Marci Sanders, Tap Into Wine.
